I am not nearly as bright and clever as the many civil servants and NDP politicians in Victoria, but I can see the obvious.
The Provincial debt is massive and must be repaid. The older people of British Columbia who have their houses paid off are wealthier than any other demographic cohort in history.
The solution, announce that anyone should be happy to inherit a Million Dollars. So let’s have an Estate or Death Tax that takes 75% of everything over a Million Dollars. With one stroke, we will keep the bond rating agencies happy.
After all, the strongest support for the NDP in British Columbia comes from the wealthier and older set. So they should applaud this equity-creating expropriation.
If I can see this, rest assured that the bright folk in the BC Finance Ministry are seeing this as well.
