Steven Lewis once said, “I don’t know how you can be a Christian and not be a socialist?”
I say, “Steve, I don’t know how you can be Christian and still be a socialist.”
Men seem, to me, to be designed to live best free. We are then accountable. If I give something to someone in need, that is virtuous and charitable. If I am taxed, compelled to give to someone in need, there is no virtue and no charity. I cannot be judged.
But God, as I understand Him, judges, and if as socialism demands, all freedom is taken except the freedom to obey the state, then He has nothing to judge. The state has taken His place. And that is idolatry.
