Glad to be Alberta bound

I have recently moved back to Alberta from another province.   Living in that province was good; it was pleasant, the people were more than gracious and polite.  But they were not Albertan.

We realized we missed the distinct Alberta culture, the different Alberta ways, the distinguishing Alberta style.  It is brash, yet humble.  It may seem materialistic at first, but upon investigation, you realize that there is a reservoir of spiritual depth underneath.  The energy and focus on oil, cattle, grain, and forest products are expended in fulfillment of a mission and duty to provide and improve, not to enrich personally.

Alberta, I now clearly see, is a distinct society.

We may be more prosperous, younger, and better educated, but these superficial metrics do not capture the profound uniqueness of these cherished people who occupy this great land.

I am glad to be home.

It is an attraction that is not shared by everyone. My fellow law students used to ask why I would move to a city littered with buffalo chips. I replied that in Alberta, I did not have to explain my politics, in Ontario, I was constantly explaining and defending my political views. So those who are attracted are self-selecting.

I want to hear what you think!
