Do we need regulation?

Who wants regulation of alcohol counselors and alcohol treatment facilities? Who cares? Whose interests are served?

Ralph Klein, our beloved premier, often asked in Cabinet meetings, “Who wants this law and why?”

What a brilliant question. Who wants regulation of alcohol counsellors and alcohol treatment centers. Is it the thousands who have for decades have been saved by volunteer and amateur counsellors? Is it the thousands who have failed to grasp hold of sobriety?

Or might it be the unions who want to expand their membership by increasing social workers who are certified and qualified and regulated? Or is it social workers themselves and their teachers who have invested in a social work degree and want to draw up the drawbridge to protect others from coming in? Or is it the hundreds of counsellors who are aspiring for more money?

Ralph Klein’s question is a legitimate one. Who’s asking for regulation of alcohol counsellors and alcohol treatment centers? Not me.

I want to hear what you think!
