Alberta exceptionalism

The most distressing thing about the Trudeau purchase of the TransMountain Pipeline is the appearance that Alberta is now on the same footing as Quebec with its Bombardier subsidies and Ontario with its auto bailout. Notley is right, as she declared after her election in Alberta, the age of Alberta exceptionalism is over.

For now that is; Alberta is in fact exceptional. Many of us have self-selected a province that has an atmosphere of freedom, whose language includes references to liberty and individual rights. Alberta is still a place where the phrase “family values” is not some dog whistle to send the whole community into a frenzy.

I live in hope that Alberta exceptionalism will be restored.
